Masterclass
leonardo van dijl

Within this program around the work of director Leonardo van Dijl, we combine a screening of his three short films with a conversation with the director and a masterclass on casting with van Dijl and casting director Sien Josephine Teijssen.

You can register for each program separately, but it is of course most interesting to combine the two. More information about this program and the short films can be found via the button next to it.

workshop
actor direction

This workshop on directing actors aims to teach you in a very practical way how to deal with actors as a director. Few things are as crucial as a credible acting performance, but at the same time this is often left entirely to the capacities of the person playing the role. It is of great importance that there is a good bond and clear communication between the cast and the director.

Some actors ask for a lot of guidance and input, others find it more important not to get too many instructions. Directing is more than just shouting “action” and “cut”: you work with people with whom you build an interaction.

In this workshop you will be guided by director Thomas Deknop and actor Tibbe Walckiers. Together you will do exercises and direct a few scenes, simulate a casting, do improvisation exercises where you will receive continuous feedback from both Thomas and Tibe, as well as from the other participants. Daring to be vulnerable and open to people and creating trust are paramount. During this workshop you will simulate a rehearsal process and a film recording that will be recorded in a simple way, so that you can continue to use it as an evaluation later.

Given the nature of this workshop, you should send a short motivation and an overview of your experience as a filmmaker in advance, possibly with specific problems you experience or where you could use help. This way we can better tailor the workshop to the needs of the participants.

Experience level

You don't need to be an expert or have tons of experience to participate. This workshop is for film students (bachelor & master), graduated filmmakers and directors who make independent films. If you have never worked with actors before, this workshop is not the right place for you. A minimum of experience is required.

feedback
scenario

Are you stuck with your short film script or do you want to break the loneliness of writing by chatting about your story with a professional screenwriter? By registering, you will receive 30 minutes of personal feedback from screenwriter Shauni De Gussem . You send your script in advance and specify what exactly you want feedback on.

If selected, you will be sent a list in which you can indicate a preferred slot between 13:30 and 17:30. If there is sufficient interest, a group session will also be set up in which peer-to-peer feedback is given under supervision.

Shauni De Gussem is an artistic researcher at RITCS School of Arts, freelance screenwriter and story consultant. She teaches film analysis, screenwriting and narrative research in the bachelor and master programs of LUCA School of Arts, and creative writing at WISPER. In addition, she writes cultural criticism for various publications and gives lectures on film, visual and narrative culture, creative writing, psychoanalysis and literature.

panel discussion
how do you make movies
as a collective?

What does collective filmmaking entail when the arts sector and society are strongly committed to individual self-realization? How do you, as a maker, individually and in a group, take a position in the midst of an often fragmented field? How does co-creation work? What are the ethical and aesthetic pitfalls of making films together?

Just like living together, working together raises all sorts of questions. In order to get an idea of some answers, the film magazine Fantômas invites the Antwerp collective Ursula and the Belgian-Congolese Collectif Faire-Part for a group discussion. Because collective filmmaking is timeless, researcher Liesje Baltussen (University of Antwerp) joins in to feed the dialogue with insights about the Antwerp film collective Fugitive Cinema, founded in the 1960s.

The invited collectives will provide films and film fragments to reinforce their words. In this dynamic alternation of words and images there is also room for dialogue with the audience.

This program is organized by film magazine Fantômas .
